This was a really interesting project I made with my good friend from college Bruno Leal. The objective was to pick a well-established work of art and make some kind of reinterpretation of it.
While researching, we found Composition with Gray and Light Brown, by dutch modernist painter Piet Mondrian. We had a good laugh with the weird idea of the painting’s rectangles being the doors from the opening credits of Pixar’s Monsters Inc, a movie we both loved as kids. We thought the colorful, angular, flat look of those quirky animations fit almost seamlessly with the simple shapes of Mondrian’s work.
What we ended up with was a lively little playground with little versions of the movie’s characters in what was before a somewhat rigid color study.
